About TropSoc

Welcome to TropSoc, the Student Societies of Tropical Medicine. TropSoc is a network of student societies dedicated to the field of tropical medicine. We organise in medical schools across the UK. TropSoc aims to bring experts in the field of tropical disease and health care professionals who have worked in the tropics to medical schools around the United Kingdom in order to expand students’ understanding of international health, neglected diseases and how they can help the cause of health care in the tropics during their careers.

Though based at medical schools, every branch of TropSoc is open to anyone in health care or science, from students of microbiology, to nurses, midwives and qualified doctors. We endeavor to keep all our events and lecture free of charge, however each of our societies rely on individual sponsorship so we welcome any donations. Each society page has a PayPal donations button you can use to help fund our work - and every little helps!

Founded at Peninsula Medical School, the first society, the Peninsula Society of Tropical Medicine, established a sister society at Hull York Medical School in 2010 and the Student Societies of Tropical Medicine was formed to help coordinate the two and begin organising additional branches around the UK. TropSoc is a new student organisation that will change and grow over the coming months to provide a national framework for all medical students involved in our societies.

TropSoc.org

We aim for TropSoc.org to provide information and advice to all our members in pursuing careers in infectious disease and tropical medicine as well as on organising electives and working with NGOs such as MSF in the tropics. We also provide e-learning facilities to help teach students about the pathophysiology and epidemiology of diseases not normally covered on medical courses in the western world in order to help prepare them for electives or relief work in countries affected by tropical diseases. You can also keep up to date with the events planned by your local society or arrange to set up a branch at your own medical school via. our branch pages.

Some of the features you can find on TropSoc.org:

• We update our front page with news relating to tropical medicine and health care in the developing world.

• You can use the "Branches" section to find the home page of the branch nearest you or set up a branch at your own medical school.

• All TropSoc events are listed in the "Events Calendar" where you can sort through each branches upcoming talks.

• You can find more information about what tropical medicine involves, how you can study it, how doctors can specialise in TM and how health care professionals can organise relief work in the tropics.

• Our new "E-Learning" archive allows users to browse and submit presentations covering any area of tropical medicine. We believe teaching is one of the best ways to revise, so we also reward any successful submissions with a certificate for your portfolio - ideal for medical students.

• Our "Campaigns" page lists the various projects we endorse and think you should too!

• Click "Sponsors" to see who help fund our organisation and "Contact Us" to get in touch with one of the team.

Our Structure

TropSoc, it's website and national activities, is managed by a National Committee. The National Committee has not yet been appointed, check back in the coming months for more information.

TropSoc consists of branches attached to medical schools around the UK, for example the Peninsula Society of Tropical Medicine (PSTM) or the Hull York Society of Tropical Medicine (HYSTM). Each individual society has it's own Branch Committee consisting of President and his or her staff who organise their own events, lectures and microteaches and operate on their own budget.

Interested in tropical medicine? Want to work in the developing world during your career? Does your medical school not have a branch? Set up a Student Society of Tropical Medicine and we can provide you with all the support and advice you need as well as a branch page here on tropsoc.org.

What is Tropical Medicine?

Tropical Medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with diseases and health care issues primarily affecting the tropical and sub-tropical world. From infectious diseases to public health, the tropical world faces unique health challenges being home to sometimes harsh climates, underdeveloped health care systems, conflict and social unrest. Through either specialising in tropical medicine or working with relief agencies such as Médecins Sans Frontières and Médecins du Monde, health care professionals can directly effect the lives of those living in some of the poorest parts of the world.
